Why Is Darts So Popular?

Darts is a game that is enjoying huge growth all around the world at the moment. It is still most popular in the UK, and indeed the Netherlands, but many people are taking up the sport as TV coverage continues to expand into other countries. So why is it so popular?

Well from a spectator's point of view, there are several things that will keep you entertained. Firstly thanks to the PDC, you have got the best players in the world playing each other pretty much every week, and there are lots of televised tournaments on both terrestrial and satellite TV. Therefore you have got lots of high scoring with lots of players now averaging around 100, and lots of close matches.

However although it's a great sport to watch, it's also a great game to play and many TV viewers actually play the game themselves. It's a very simple sport to take up. All you need is a dartboard and a set of darts. You simply attach the dartboard to a wall at home and away you go. Failing that you can always go down your local pub and play there.

Indeed it's the pub culture that is one of the reasons why darts is popular with the male population. If you practice and become a half-decent player you can start playing for your local pub side and take part in local leagues and competitions. You don't need to be that good either because just a 50 or 60 three-dart average would be enough to get in most pub teams.

Another reason why darts is so popular is because it's a game that you can play on your own if you so wish. Indeed if you are serious about becoming a decent player you should consider playing darts for at least one or two hours every day, because that's the only way you are going to improve.

If you spend time practicing not only your scoring, but also your singles and doubles, ie going around the board from 1 to 20, then you will start to develop a good all-round game. However if you only practice hitting treble 20 all the time, then you will never be able to close out games by hitting the all-important doubles.

Overall darts is a just a brilliant sport in my opinion, whether you simply watch it on TV or whether you play the game yourself. It's very cheap to get started and it can be played by people of all ages. You can even play darts for hours on end in your own home if you so wish.
