When you have become interested by collecting watches, are already a watch collector or thinking forward to conducting your first watch purchase then you more than likely have seen all the different choices available such as the way the watch innards are composed, how they are charged, what indicators is presented on the dial and also how much maintenance is needed for your most recent wrist watch and life expectancy. After you have looked into a variety of watch collections it is simple to notice that it is quite common for a watch enthusiast to have a theme transposed through their collection. Many watch collectors may opt for a particular company name such as Oris or Seiko, many will expand their portfolio by concentrating on the heart of the timepiece, the mechanism inside. The collector may only be interested in watches that run on a mechanical movement rather than quartz powered. One popular idea is to collect during a time frame, maybe a period where the collector found the designs to be interesting or more attractive than new designs. If you are looking to collect watches from days gone by and not brand new then you will probably be looking at investing a bit more as very collectable timepieces are considered a financial investment and usually appreciate in monetary value. Whatever your price range you can get started as a watch collector, from a couple of pounds for a watch in a lot less than perfect shape to a few hundred thousand pounds for a particularly uncommon or collectible watch. Websites like ebay are a great source of used watches as are internet forums which have sections to purchase, advertise and trade watches. It isn't in any way wrong to build a collection of random, non-related watches, some people only invest in timepieces they admire the appearance of and do not have much enthusiasm for the workings, heritage or company responsible for the brand. This means you are able to build up an eclectic and interesting collection and are in no way hindered by any rules or criteria you have set yourself. Many watch collectors are interested to have knowledge of the inner complexities of their watches, how they work, when the innards were initially put into production, why specific functions were decided on and this is the majority of the interest for them. One more main point is how intricate and adept the movement is, maybe the most complex bit of engineering they possess, only rivalled by high-performance sports bikes. Some people however collect them for their looks and style. Watches can be seen as an item of luxury and great exuberance with prices varying from that of a sandwich to costing more than a car or a house. Rap and Hip Hop stars tend to opt for the rarer or completely custom pieces, usually encrusted with numerous jewels, gold and platinum. This is seen as a trophy of wealth and how successful they are as they can afford such a vast amount on something so small and relatively insignificant. Some other celebrities base their watch choices on models they like, ones which can be worn at different occasions and of course some watches are given by watch makers for free, as gifts but really amount to free advertising due to the newspapers and press picking up on the story that Keanu Reeves is wearing a new Oris.
