Located in Contra Costa County in California, Discovery Bay is a city with a rich history. Located about an hour out of San Francisco, Discovery Bay has a smaller community feel while still being close to a big city. In 2006 the population of Discovery Bay was only 16,500 people. A large portion of the homes in this town have private docks that give the homeowners access to the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. Originally the town only consisted of these waterfront properties. It was not until recently that Discovery Bay made Discovery Bay West a part of their city. In Discovery Bay West there are many homes that do not have waterfront property. There are gated communities and open communities in Discovery Bay West. It was not until July of 2007 that the town had its own zip code. In previous years the town had shared the zip code 94514 with the neighboring town of Byron. When the town finally got their own zip code, 94505, they had a huge celebration. This celebration set the scene for the paddle boat raft-up that set world records. The city of Discovery Bay consists of only 9.1 square miles. Of these 9.1 square miles 1.1 of them is constituted of water. The combination of waterfront property and small town feel is hard to come by. Cities like Discovery Bay are few and far between. In 2000 the census records show that the city consisted of 8,981people. Of all of these people there were 3,349 households and 2,635 families within the city limits. The census also tells that there are 3,781 housing units. This means that the average density of homes is 468.1 square miles. The density of people was only 1,111.9 per every square mile. This means that for every square mile of the city there are about 1,112 people residing. The county of Discovery bay is not very diverse culturally. If you are looking for a city in which you can learn about different cultures and experience a wide variety of personalities Discovery Bay is not for you. 87.57 percent of the population that resides in this city are white, 10.43% of the population is Hispanic or Latino, 1.84% of the population is Black or African American, 0.84% of the population is Native American, 1.78% of the population is Asian and 0.18% of the population is Pacific Islander. If you are looking to move to Discovery Bay and you have children living with you in your home that are under the age of 18, you should know that only 33.7% of the population has children living at home as well. The largest demographic in Discovery Bay is married couples living together; they consist of 71.3% of the population. There is also a very small potion, 4.3%, of women that are living in the home with no husband present. In Discovery Bay the average household size is only 2.64 while the average family size was 2.91. Only 14.0% of the population was made up of an individual living in a home by himself or herself. 33.0% of the population is between 25 and 44 years of age. 25.4% of the population is under the age of 18 while only 4.4% of the population is between 18 and 24. 29.5% of the population are between the ages of 45 and 64 and only 8.6% are individuals that are 65 years of age or older. The median age of a resident in the county of Discovery Bay is 39 years old. For eery 100 females that live in the town there are 107 males. The city also has a very high socioeconomic status in general. With the median income for household and for a family is about $90,000. Only 3.3% of the population is below the poverty line. Included in this number is 1.7% of those under the age of 18 and 4.3% of the citizens that are over the age of 65. If you are looking to relocate to this area it is also important to know about the school districts. If you are going to be raising a family you should be informed about the quality of the public schools. There are two elementary schools within the district and only one middle school. The middle school became a California Distinguished School in 2004. Understanding the demographics and geography of a city before you decide to relocate is important. It is even more important to understand the people that reside in the city to know if the city is a good fit for you.
